Streetart in Tallinn

Urban art
The streets of Tallinn
November 2012
Streetart

This is what I found this November in Tallinn, some small surprises, some large:

Pyramid
There are plenty of these pyramids in town, especially south of the center.

Activity lead to victory
These rats are also everywhere, this one has a message: "Activity leads to victory"

Two rats and a dino
Two rats are out for a ride, joined by a dinosaur

Shiba / whore
I am not sure if this woman is a tribute to Roy Liechtenstein, but apparently someone considers her a whore

JLEKSAP
JLEKSAP
Is it code? Is it cyrillian? Someone's made a message in tape at the Freedom Square

Face and decor
Dark face on a power station

Marilyn
Lots of Marilyns appeared as pasteups on covered windows

Marilyn and Andy
And some Andys are there to keep her company

Grand mural in Luha street
And a treat at last, I was so thrilled to see this large, colorful mural on a wall that used to be grey and boring. This seems like a comissioned collaboration of several artists, there might be a Multistab monster in there too.

The Art of Collecting

The Art of Collecting
6th Tallinn Applied Art Triennal
24.11.12-3.2.13
Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design, Tallinn

The 6th Tallinn Applied Art Triennal is a festivity of great design and great ideas joined. Large spaces on two floors of the museum, plus a performance moving through the corridor, provide space for a vast variety of artwork. The theme is collections or collecting, and all artworks are somehow connected to this topic. Here are some of my favourites:

Sculptures

Many of Jaak Soans' works are familiar to not only Estonians, but also visitors. His sculptures of famous Estonians are present in the cityscape, both in the old town and in the modern centre. Most known is probably the A.H.Tammsaare monument in the Tammsaare Park just outside the Viru shopping mall. A sculpture you pass by on your rush between the shopping mall and the opera, or where the local youngsters use to hang during Summer days. Knowing his majestic and solid works in iron, it is a joy to see him play with other materials and forms as well, like installations or machines of dubious purposes, or a bunch of ladders obscuring a backwards video of tourists entering the city from the ferry.

My Kingdom
Tanel Veenre
2.-25.11.12

Kunstihoone galerii, Tallinn
Jewelry and adornments

Jewelry and adornments fit for a king are displayed both in glass monters and decorating the chest on different persons on black&white photos. The artist has created his kingdom, where he rules over the people that carry the jewelry, or maybe the people own the jewelry and are their own masters. Is jewelry and symbols of power all it takes to gain power?

PÖFF 2012 top 5

Pimedate Ööde Filmifestival / Black Nights Film Festival
Tallinn, Estonia
12.-28.11.12

This is my very subjective top 5 list of 13 seen films at this year's film festival:

1:Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry
A movie about my favourite artist and one of my favourite countries, China, would have made it to the top list even if it was not well made. Now this documentary is very well made, so that makes it my very favourite film.

2:A Caretaker's Tale

High score on the contrasts, the beauty and the surprises mixed with a wonderful, unique story.

3:Puhastus/Purge

Based on a price-winning novel, based on what may have happened to some during the Soviet occupation and today, and very well presented on the screen.

4:Marie Krøyer
Wonderfully filmed with the colors and the light of Krøyer's paintings, and the intense beauty of the first so happy and then so sad Marie.

5:A Lady in Paris
A well told story, with a well fitting mood. Great to see such quality in Estonian film making.

PÖFF 2012 part 2

Pimedate Ööde Filmifestival / Black Nights Film Festival
Tallinn, Estonia
12.-28.11.12

A Lady in Paris
Ilmar Raag
Estonia/France/Belgium 2012

This is a story about being all alone, about fulfilling dreams, about living in exile, about relationships. A middle-aged woman grasps the opportunity to get away from her dreary life in Estonia as she is offered the posision as the assistant of an elderly Estonian woman in Paris, the city of her dreams. But as she arrives she discoveres that reality is quite different from the dream. She realizes she is all alone. But after a while she understands the old woman is even more lonesome. She has cut all her bonds to fulfill her dreams. The film urges you to consider what, and most of all who, is important.

In Another Country
Sang-soo Hong
South Korea 2012

Three stories, all created in a bored young girl's mind. All with the same actress playing the foreign protagonist. On the surface this seems like a film about a foreigner "lost in translation". But it is rather a film about how locals consider foreigners. The foreigner becomes an object of desire, envy and jelousy. They all are considered being the same (like we Europeans tend to think Asians all look the same) - in this case they actually ARE the same actress.

Mushrooming
Toomas Hussar
Estonia 2012

An Estonian comedy about corruption, lies and mushroom picking. Gather the cliches: the middle-aged grey politician, his energetic wife eager for outdoor life, the über-cool rock star, and send them to the forest while a corruption scandal hits the press and the young assistant tries to clean up. Let them be lost for days, and then be attacked by a local villain - and this is "Mushrooming". The film does not pretend to seriously work on the issues corruption among politicians, the difference between urban and rural life, or the easily led press. It just wants to make fun of the stereotypics. The politician manages to quench the scandal by sweet talking, and all is back to normal. Just lean back and have fun. I am not sure how well the humor is taken outside Estonia, though.

A Caretaker's Tale
Katrine Wiedemann
Denmark 2011

A misantropic caretaker suddenly discover a naked, speechless girl in an empty flat. In a weird way her beauty brings light into his grey life. Miracles do happen. But for how long does a miracle last? How long can you cling on to that miracle until you have to get on with your life? And does sharing the miracle make it smaller or larger? Important questions are asked in this gem of a Danish film, full of surprises.

The Sessions
Ben Lewin
USA 2012

A poet suffering from polio wants to feel physical love, even if he is chained to the bed and iron lung. We meet the three important women in his life, the one that loved him "- but not that way", the one that learned him about sex, and the one that loved him in all ways. The second is the important one, the one that made him accept his shortcomings and appreciate his possibilities. A warm story about how what you think is impossible becomes possible, about dreams come true, about happy endings. A well made, well played, all through USA-nian feelgood film.

Everybody's Gone
Georgi Paradzhanov
Georgia/Russia/Czech rep 2012

A picturesqe film about childhood in a Georgian town in the 60s. We are shown the traditions of marriage and funeals, but also the individual strange habits of tying the left-handed boy's left hand and the witch collecting dreams in bottles. A nice film showing life in a village, or is it a town. Is this typical of Georgia? We will have to go there ourselves to check it out, and after all, much may have changed during the years. As is also shown in the prologue and epilogue, where the boy is old and is looking back.

Chaos
Faure Etienne
France 2012

A triangle love drama from France, that is not exactly something new. But this has several surprising twists to the story, turning it into a square, septant, or whatever, love drama. And it is not about love after all. The story is inventing and could have been quite interesting and thrilling. But that was let down by strange editing to some annoying jumps in time or repetitions, and leaving out important parts of the story. And the use of sound when a perfectly calm and ordinary scene is pimped up with scary music. Sad, because this could have been quite a good thriller about the danger of moving from the city to the countryside.

PÖFF 2012 part 1

Pimedate Ööde Filmifestival / Black Nights Film Festival
Tallinn, Estonia
12.-28.11.12

It is that time of the year when not only the nights are dark, but the days are as well, and the best place to stay is indoor. A perfect time for a film festival, and PÖFF celebrates its 16. year this year.

So far I have seen these films during my first three days:

Puhastus / Purge
Antti Jokinen
Finland/Estonia 2012

A movie based on the price-winning novel by Sofi Oksanen. Two women with different horrible stories meet. One has experienced the horror of occupation, the other the horror of trafficking. There seems to be no hope, but they both found their way, one chose to stay, the other one to escape. Through their experiences we see how bad it can possibly get, until they are left with no choice other than what others would consider repulsive. Those are the stories we do not want to see, we would prefer them to be untold, pretending that they do not happen. But  they do happen, that is why they need to be told. The film is able to show the horror to such a content it really gets under our skin.

Pieta
Kim Ki-duk
South Korea 2012

A fresh film from the South-Korean master director. The film is so horrible and repulsive I never want to see it again, I do not want to live through that. The film is that good. It is a catharsis with no end. There is no limit to the brutality of the protagonist. In his world it is perfectly logical to  make poor people cripples in order to cash in their insurance  money. His brutality is even repulsive to his mafia boss. When a woman arrives, claiming to be his mother, will that change him? Will that make him soft, and start making up for his sins? Is it really that simple?

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry
Alison Klayman
USA 2012

This is a wonderful documentary about one of my favourite artists. Ai Weiwei is world famous not only because of his ingenuity and creativity in his use of materials. The film most of all shows his deep conscience towards other people and his struggle to make a better world. His art is not only art as decoration or entertainment, his art actually changes the world. The documentary clearly aims to portray Ai Weiwei as a great artist and a wonderful person, and it succeeds in doing that.

Gone Fishing
Carlos Sorin
Argentina 2012

The film starts with the protagonist stranded on a gas station run out of fuel, and there are 420 km to the next gas station. This is symptomatic to not only the Patagonian area, but also the feel of the film. There are no spectacular action - the most dramatic is as the protagonist gets seasick. The distances are vast and communication is difficult, not only geographically but also between people. Everybody is stranded there for some reason. It is a film that forces you to slow down, appreciate the small joys of life. It tells you to enjoy the company of the people you meet, whether you have  something in common or not.

Marie Krøyer
Bille August
Denmark 2012

A film based on the story of the wife of Danish painter P.S. Krøyer (actually he was born in Stavanger in 1851). We have heard the stories before- the fantastic artist that is adored by the public as his family suffers under his ego - and the woman that breaks out of the impossible marriage to seek her own purpose and love. The protagonists even several times point to the "A Doll's House" play by Henrik Ibsen with the latter topic. But Bille August manage to make this a new story, we feel deep sympathy with the beautiful, but oh so sad Marie Krøyer, and feel happy when she is happy. She makes choices she might regret, but maybe she would have regretted even more taking no chances. An all through wonderful and touching film filled with the magic light of Skagen that her husband painted so well.

The Deep
Baltasar Kormakur
Iceland 2012

An incredible story from an incredible place. The people of Vestmannaeyar on Iceland live in constant danger, living on an active vulcano, and earning their living fishing on the rough arctic sea. This is the true story of the man who started swimming as the boat sank, crossed incredible distances in freezing water, surviving the impossible. A touching story reminding us of how fragile life is and how strong a human can be.

Streetart in London

Streetart
Brick Lane / Shoreditch, London
various artists

This is what I found in the Brick Lane / Shoreditch area in London on a well guided evening walk:

I started in the City, the sterile area by the Thames, where this is the only piece I found:

Then I headed north and slightly east where I bumped into the "Alphabet Street", where most of the shop shutters have letters painted by Eine:

- and then suddenly I was close to Brick Lane, where the fun begins. I walked along the street along curry shops with 15% discount, together with flaneuring hipsters and confused tourists, peeking around every corner to discover art:
